“How would you say your sense of humor is different from ours?”

What to listen for

If they point out something specific, sharper, weirder, more sarcastic, with pride, that's a healthy claim of their own identity distinct from you; they need that difference celebrated, not treated as a critique of the family.

If they say it's basically the same, that's a nice sign of connection too, no need to push them toward finding a difference that isn't there.

If they seem hesitant to criticize your humor even gently, let them know it's genuinely safe to say theirs is better or just different, they need to know honesty here won't hurt your feelings.
