What to listen for

If they can name one and still feel good about the decision itself, that's real maturity, they need that pride affirmed loudly, because outcome-obsessed culture rarely rewards it.

If they struggle to separate the choice from the result, gently point out the difference without lecturing, they need to hear that good decisions can still lead to bad outcomes, and that's not their fault.

If nothing comes to mind, ask about a recent choice, even a small one, sometimes it's easier to find pride in something tiny and specific.
