Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Tell me about a time you gave up something small, like your turn or a snack, so someone else could feel better.”
What to listen for
If they remember it easily and seem a little proud, that shows generosity is already becoming part of how they see themselves, not just something they're told to do.
If they mention it felt hard to give up, that's honest and good, generosity that costs something still counts, and noticing the hard part helps them value their own kindness more.
If they can't think of a time, ask what they'd be willing to give up for a friend having a rough day.
What this tells you
Their willingness to give something up for someone else shows a growing sense that caring for others matters as much as getting their own way.
