Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“How do you think your sense of humor has changed as you've gotten older?”
What to listen for
If they can point to specific shifts, jokes that used to be funny that aren't anymore, or new kinds of humor they've discovered, that's a sign of real self-awareness about their own growth, which is worth celebrating out loud.
Listen for whether their humor now involves more wordplay, sarcasm, or observational jokes, these shifts often track with them developing a sharper, more independent way of seeing the world.
If they say it hasn't changed, ask what makes them laugh now versus a couple years ago, sometimes the change is there, just not named yet.
What this tells you
This shows you how their mind is maturing and forming its own distinct point of view on what's funny and true.
