Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“What's something you've worked hard at that's finally starting to click?”
What to listen for
If they answer with visible satisfaction, that's a great sign of a healthy relationship with effort, they're learning that struggle now can lead to real progress later, which builds durable confidence rather than confidence that depends on things being easy.
If they mention it almost in passing, like it's not a big deal, gently reflect back that it sounds like real progress; sometimes teens undersell their own effort and need someone to name it as impressive.
If nothing comes to mind, that's fine too, not everything has to be "clicking" right now, and you can ask again in a few weeks.
What this tells you
This shows you where they're building real competence through effort, which is one of the most durable sources of confidence they can have.
