Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Is there something you were really into a year ago that you're just not anymore?”
What to listen for
An easy answer shows they're comfortable with the fact that who they are keeps shifting, that's a healthy sign they're not locked into an old version of themselves out of fear of change.
If they seem a little wistful or unsure why the interest faded, that's worth just sitting with together rather than analyzing, sometimes interests fade for reasons kids can't quite name yet.
If they insist nothing's changed, gently mention something you remember them loving that hasn't come up in a while, it might jog a more honest answer.
What this tells you
This shows you how comfortable your child is with their own evolving identity.
