The prompt

“When a game doesn't go your way, what do you think fairness actually means in that moment?”

What to listen for

If they can separate 'fair' from 'what I wanted,' that's a big developmental step showing real fairness is forming, not just self-interest. Point that out warmly.

If their answer leans toward 'fair means I win,' that's completely normal for this age, gently offer another way to look at it without shaming them.

If they mention a specific recent loss, listen for how they're still feeling about it and let them vent a little first.
