What to listen for

A direct, considered answer shows they trust you'll actually listen rather than get defensive about a rule you set, that trust matters more than the specific answer.

If they push for later with a real reason (not just 'everyone else gets to'), that's them practicing making a case for something, a skill worth rewarding even if the rule doesn't change tonight.

If they say it's fine but seem to hesitate, gently ask if there's a specific night it feels wrong, sometimes the issue is really about one recurring situation, not the rule itself.
