Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“When siblings get treated differently for the same kind of thing, what does fairness look like to you?”
What to listen for
Listen for whether they frame fairness as identical treatment or as treatment that fits each kid's age, needs, or situation. The more nuanced answer usually means they've actually thought this through, maybe after feeling shortchanged themselves at some point.
If a specific example comes up, let them fully make their case without immediately explaining your reasoning; understanding how it landed for them matters more right now than justifying the decision.
If they say "it's fine, whatever," that might be a real feeling or a guarded one, a soft follow-up like "really, or just easier to say that" can open it up without pressure.
What this tells you
Their view on sibling fairness reveals how much they feel individually seen and valued, versus just compared to a brother or sister.
