Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“If your friends had to describe you in one sentence, what would they say?”
What to listen for
Notice whether they answer with confidence or uncertainty, a confident answer suggests they feel secure in how others see them, while hesitation might mean they're not sure how they're perceived, or worried the real answer isn't flattering.
If what they imagine friends would say differs a lot from how they see themselves, that gap is worth gently noting, since mismatches between self-image and perceived image can weigh on teens more than they let on.
If they laugh it off with something self-deprecating, you can playfully push back with something genuine you'd add, without turning it into a big moment.
What this tells you
This reveals how they think they're perceived by peers, and whether that perception feels aligned with who they actually feel they are.
