Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“When's the last time you apologized to someone even though it was hard to be the one to say it first?”
What to listen for
If they tell the story readily, it means they feel proud of that moment and comfortable showing you the version of themselves that can be humble, that's worth genuinely admiring out loud.
If they say it was awkward or they almost didn't do it, that honesty about the struggle matters more than a polished version, let them know struggling to apologize and doing it anyway is the real strength.
If nothing comes to mind, you can mention a small example of your own first; it can make the question feel less like a test of their character.
What this tells you
This tells you how they're learning to handle their own pride when it's in the way of a relationship they care about.
