What to listen for

If they name a person and a specific value, it means they're actively building their own worldview from multiple sources, not just absorbing ours passively, that's independent thinking taking shape.

If they credit a friend, coach, or even a stranger, take it as good news rather than a competition, it means they're paying attention to good examples wherever they find them.

If they can't think of anything, you might mention someone you've noticed influencing them and see if that jogs something loose.
