Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there a time being honest cost you something, but you still think it was worth it?”
What to listen for
If they tell a real story about it, it means they've genuinely wrestled with the tradeoffs of telling the truth and come out valuing honesty on their own terms, not just because they were told to.
If the story involves a friendship or social cost, listen without rushing to reassure them it'll always work out, sometimes honesty really does cost something, and they need that acknowledged, not smoothed over.
If they can't think of an example yet, that's fine, you can share a small one of your own to show this is a real, ongoing struggle, not a childhood lesson they should already have mastered.
What this tells you
This tells you how they're weighing truth against comfort right now, and what it costs them to choose honesty.
