Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you were in charge, what would bedtime really look like around here?”
What to listen for
If they add in more connection, like extra stories or snuggles, rather than just a later bedtime, they're telling you the ritual matters more to them than the clock does.
If they mostly want more control over the timing, that's them wanting a say in something that currently feels imposed on them, worth hearing out even if the rule doesn't change.
If they say "I don't know," ask what part of bedtime they like best right now and what part they like least.
What this tells you
Their ideal bedtime shows whether what they're really craving is more say in the rules or more closeness in the routine.
