“If you could have any animal as a pet, or even be one for a day, which would it be and why?”

What to listen for

If they explain their choice with real reasoning, notice what quality they're drawn to, freedom, strength, cuddliness, it often reflects something they want more of in their own life.

If they pick something purely for fun with no deeper reasoning, that's completely fine too; not every answer needs to mean something.

If they can't decide, let them talk through a couple options out loud, the back-and-forth itself is often more revealing than the final pick.
