“If you could invent a creature that doesn't exist yet, what would it be like?”

What to listen for

If they describe it in rich detail, powers, personality, what it eats, they're showing off real confidence in their imagination and enjoying being the one in charge of a whole new world.

If the creature is protective or friendly toward them specifically, that's a hint they might be craving a sense of being looked after or accompanied right now.

If they say "I don't know," ask "is it big and scary or small and sweet?" to get them started with an easy first choice.

What this tells you
