What to listen for

If they can recall a specific moment, they're showing real growth in valuing relationships over the satisfaction of winning, which is a meaningful, values-based choice.

If they admit that's really hard for them, that's honest and valuable, winning matters a lot at this age, and it's worth appreciating the honesty rather than pushing for a nicer answer.

If they say "I don't know," offer a hypothetical, like letting a younger sibling win a race, and ask how that would feel.
