If they give a reasoned distinction, they're developing real judgment about responsibility versus choice, not just trying to get out of work, that's worth taking seriously.

If they argue everything should be optional, they may be testing how much control they have over their own time, hear them out before deciding anything changes.

If they say the current split feels fine, that's good information, and worth simply appreciating out loud.
