“When you're all grown up, what do you want your bedroom to look like?”

What to listen for

If they describe a room full of fun and freedom (no bedtime, candy everywhere, video games), that's just delightful kid logic about what "grown up" means, enjoy the fantasy. If they describe a room that sounds cozy or safe (soft blankets, nightlight, pictures of family), that can be a sign of what makes them feel most secure right now, projected into the future.

Notice if they mention wanting to still be near family or wanting distance/independence, both are healthy, just different signals about where they are in wanting closeness versus autonomy.

If they say "I don't know," ask what they'd want to keep from their room right now, unchanged, that's often the emotional core of the answer.

What this tells you

Their future bedroom is often less about furniture and more about what currently makes them feel safe or free.
