Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“How much help with homework actually feels okay to ask for, versus feeling like you should figure it out alone?”
What to listen for
If they have a clear line, they're developing a healthy sense of when to ask for help and when to push through themselves, that's real independence forming well.
If they say they never want help, watch for whether that's pride in their own ability or fear of looking like they can't do it, those need very different responses from you.
If they say they always want help, that might mean they don't yet trust their own problem-solving, gently encourage one small thing to try alone first next time.
What this tells you
This shows where they currently draw the line between needing support and wanting to prove they can do it themselves.
