The prompt

“Was there ever a time doing the right thing felt lonely, like nobody else was doing it with you?”

What to listen for

If they can name a real moment, that's a big, meaningful realization for this age, that doing right doesn't always come with company or applause, and yet they did it anyway. Name that courage specifically and clearly, because it's easy for kids to feel like good behavior only counts if someone notices.

If they describe feeling unsure or wobbly about it afterward, reassure them that the lonely feeling doesn't mean they were wrong, sometimes right and lonely go together, and that's okay.

If they say "I don't know," ask about a time they didn't join in on something everyone else was doing, even a small thing.

What this tells you

Recognizing that doing right can feel lonely shows they're building a sense of values that doesn't depend on approval from the crowd.
