Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you invented a race using only socks and the floor, what would the rules be?”
What to listen for
A kid who dives straight into inventing wild rules and wants to try it immediately is showing relaxed, confident energy tonight, a great, easy sign. A kid who's more cautious about the rules being "fair" for everyone shows they're thinking ahead about group harmony, not just their own fun.
Notice if the game naturally includes everyone in the house or is designed for just them to win, neither is wrong, just worth noticing as a pattern over time.
If they say "I don't know," start sliding around in socks yourself and let the rules invent themselves in the moment.
What this tells you
How eagerly they invent physical, silly play shows how much energy and lightness they have to burn tonight.
