Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you got to design your very own school, what would it be like?”
What to listen for
Notice whether their school is mostly about more fun and freedom (recess all day, no homework) or about feeling more understood (teachers who really listen, no one gets left out), the second type of answer is worth paying close attention to, since it may point at something missing in their current school experience.
If they design a school around a specific subject or activity they love, that's a clear, joyful sign of what currently lights them up learning-wise.
If they say "I don't know," ask what one thing they'd change about school tomorrow if they had a magic wand, narrowing the question often unlocks a real answer.
What this tells you
Their dream school design often reveals either what excites them most about learning, or what currently feels missing at their real school.
