Tonight with your 13 to 17 year old
The prompt
“Is there someone younger who looks up to you, and what do you think they see?”
What to listen for
A thoughtful answer here shows they're starting to see themselves as someone who influences others, not just someone being raised, that's a meaningful shift toward feeling like their own actions and character actually matter to someone else. Let them sit in that pride a little.
If they seem surprised by the question, that's normal, teens don't always realize they're being watched and modeled after until it's pointed out.
If they can't think of anyone, that's fine, you could mention someone you've noticed looking up to them, which often opens up a nice moment of recognition.
What this tells you
This shows you how they're starting to understand their own influence on others, and how ready they feel to be looked up to rather than just looking up themselves.
