Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you could be any grown-up job for just today, firefighter, chef, astronaut, anything, which one would you pick and what's the first thing you'd do?”
What to listen for
If they choose something bold and active, rescuing, building, leading, they may be craving a chance to feel capable and important, to matter in a big visible way. Notice if the job lets them help or take care of someone.
If they pick something quiet or solitary, like a painter or a scientist alone in a lab, that could be their way of saying they want space to explore things at their own pace, without anyone rushing them.
If they can't decide or say "I don't know," offer two choices to react to, sometimes it's easier to point than to invent from nothing.
What this tells you
The job they choose is a little window into what makes them feel useful, brave, or free right now.
