What to listen for

If they talk about fairness or how it would feel if someone else always went first, they're building real empathy, understanding that everyone's turn to feel important matters, not just theirs.

If they say it's just a rule or that it's hard and they don't really get why, that's honest and normal, they may still need you to name the feeling behind it, like "it helps everyone feel like they matter too," so the rule makes emotional sense, not just "because I said so" sense.

If they say "I don't know," ask about a specific moment, like waiting for a swing, to make it concrete.
