What to listen for

If they describe trying to figure out a middle ground or asking someone for help, they're showing real problem-solving skill and comfort asking for guidance when things feel confusing.

If they describe feeling frozen or upset by the contradiction, they may need more reassurance that it's okay to be confused by mixed messages, and that asking "wait, what do you actually want me to do?" is always allowed.

If they say "I don't know," offer an example, like nap time rules at two different houses, to make it concrete.
