The prompt

“If I were having a really bad day, what's one thing you'd do to try to cheer me up?”

What to listen for

A specific plan (a hug, a joke, bringing you something, drawing a picture) shows a child who already feels capable of comforting someone else, not just receiving comfort, a lovely, mature instinct.

If their answer is something they'd want done for themselves, that's completely normal at this age too, kids often comfort others the way they'd want to be comforted, which is its own kind of empathy.

If they say "I don't know," you can gently share what actually does help you, which teaches them a real, useful tool for next time.

This shows how much they already understand about comforting others, and it often mirrors exactly what makes them feel better too.
