Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If two of your friends were arguing, how would you help them find a solution?”
What to listen for
A calm, fair-minded answer ("I'd ask what happened, then help them find something both like") shows a budding peacemaker who feels confident stepping into conflict rather than avoiding it.
If they'd pick a side or walk away, that's also honest and common, you can gently explore what makes taking sides feel safer than staying neutral for them.
If they say they'd just tell a grown-up, that's a perfectly good answer too, knowing when to get help is its own kind of wisdom.
What this tells you
This shows how they see their own role in other people's conflicts, as a peacemaker, a bystander, or someone who needs backup.
