Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“Is there a chore in our house that you think should be shared more fairly between everyone?”
What to listen for
A specific, reasoned answer shows a kid who's paying attention to how work gets divided and has a real sense of fairness forming, worth taking seriously, even if the solution isn't perfect.
If frustration comes out strongly, that's useful, it may mean this has been quietly bothering them for a while, and a small, real change (even symbolic) can go a long way toward feeling heard.
If they say everything feels fair already, that's a good sign the current balance is working, and worth acknowledging back to them.
What this tells you
This reveals whether they currently feel like a valued, equal part of the household team or like they're carrying more than their share.
