“Was there something hard you tried recently that made you feel really frustrated? What did that feel like?”

What to listen for

A specific, physical description of frustration ("hot," "like I wanted to throw it," "my hands wanted to squeeze") shows growing awareness of how big feelings show up in their body, which helps them manage it earlier next time.

If they describe pushing through the frustration anyway, that's worth real praise, persistence through frustration is a skill, not a given, at this age.

If they say they gave up or it's still bothering them, stay warm rather than fixing it right away, sometimes just naming the frustration out loud with you is enough relief for tonight.
