Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If we made a flag for our family, what would you want painted on it?”
What to listen for
Symbols tied to togetherness or shared activities (all of you holding hands, a favorite shared food or game) show a strong, secure sense of family identity and belonging.
Symbols tied just to themselves (their favorite animal, their name in big letters) show healthy self-focus at this age, which is completely normal and not a concern.
If they can't decide, ask what one word describes your family best, and build the image from that word together.
What this tells you
The symbol they choose reveals what they believe your family stands for and what makes them proud to belong to it.
