What to listen for

If they describe finding a kind, honest way to express it, that's real social and emotional skill, balancing truthfulness with care for someone's feelings is genuinely hard even for adults. If they admit they just faked liking it, that's completely normal too, you can gently ask what would have made it easier to be a little more honest without hurting anyone.

Listen for whether they feel guilty about faking enthusiasm, if so, that's worth normalizing rather than reinforcing as shameful.

If they mention a specific person and gift, let them tell the whole story; the details often carry more than the moral of it.
