Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you could invent a brand new sport for the Olympics, what would it be?”
What to listen for
If they build something wild and detailed, like blindfolded pillow racing, that imagination shows they feel free to dream big without worrying about a right answer.
If they base it on something they're already good at, that's them quietly connecting their real skills to a bigger dream, which is worth noticing out loud.
If they blank, ask what two things they love most and how they could combine them into a game.
What this tells you
How boldly they invent something shows how much room they feel they have to imagine big things for themselves.
