Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you could design how disagreements get handled so nobody gets in trouble, what would that look like?”
What to listen for
If they suggest talking it through calmly or taking a break first, that shows they're imagining conflict as something to solve, not something to be punished for, which is a mature and healthy view.
If they mention fear of getting in trouble as a reason fights escalate, that's important information, it may mean they need more reassurance that mistakes during conflict are normal and safe to admit.
If they're unsure, ask what usually happens right now when they disagree with someone, and go from there.
What this tells you
How they'd redesign conflict without punishment shows how safe they currently feel being honest during disagreements.
