Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you were in charge of screen time rules, what rule would you add?”
What to listen for
A rule with real structure (a set amount of time, a certain time of day) shows they actually understand the reasoning behind limits, not just wanting more. Acknowledge that thoughtfulness.
If their rule is just 'unlimited screen time,' that's normal to expect, you can playfully negotiate from there without shutting the idea down.
Listen for whether they mention wanting more screen time alone versus together, which says something about what they're really craving.
What this tells you
This shows you how they're starting to understand the reasons behind limits, not just wanting them removed.
