“If you could rewind today and do one disagreement over again, which one, and what would you do differently?”

What to listen for

If they can name the moment and describe a different move, they're already good at learning from friction and just need you to notice they figured it out.

If they say "I'd yell less" or "I'd walk away," they're telling you they already know the better version of themselves but need help getting there in the moment, not a lecture after.

If they say "I don't know" or "nothing," don't push. Try "was there a moment today that felt kind of bumpy with someone?", sometimes they need it broken into a smaller, easier question.

What this tells you

How they answer this shows whether they feel safe enough to admit they didn't handle something perfectly, which is exactly what lets them keep growing instead of getting stuck defending themselves.
