Tonight with your 5 to 8 year old
The prompt
“If you were the boss of the house for one day, what's one rule you'd make up?”
What to listen for
A silly rule (like 'ice cream before dinner') shows healthy imagination and testing limits in a safe, playful way. Laugh with them and ask why that rule matters to them.
A rule about fairness ('everyone has to share the remote equally') can reveal something they wish were different right now. Worth a gentle follow-up about what's bugging them.
If they invent a rule that sounds like more freedom or less structure, that's normal, it doesn't mean they don't want boundaries, just that they like imagining control.
What this tells you
Their made-up rule shows you what they wish felt more fair or more within their control right now.
