Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time you lost your temper and wish now that you hadn't?”
What to listen for
If they can reflect on it honestly, they're building real self-awareness about their own reactions, which is more valuable than never losing their temper at all.
If they seem embarrassed bringing it up, reassure them that everyone loses their temper sometimes, and that noticing it afterward is actually the hard, important part.
If they can't think of an example, that's fine, but if it comes up often in daily life, this is a good moment to talk through what helps them cool down before blowing up.
What this tells you
This tells you how they're learning to make sense of their own big feelings after the fact, which builds real self-control over time.
