What to listen for

A thoughtful, proportional answer shows they're developing real judgment about fairness, not just trying to avoid punishment, that's worth taking seriously and even adjusting rules around.

If they argue current consequences are too harsh or too soft, listen for whether the real issue is the punishment itself or feeling like they weren't heard when it happened.

If they say "whatever you think is fine," gently push a little further, kids sometimes assume their opinion on this doesn't actually count, and it's worth showing them it does.
