Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Can you think of a time you did the right thing even though nobody would have known if you didn't?”
What to listen for
If they can name a real moment and seem a little proud of it, their sense of right and wrong is becoming their own, not just something enforced from outside, that's worth real recognition.
If they say they've never been tempted or can't think of one, gently probe with a specific example (returning extra change, not peeking at a gift), they might just need help recognizing it happened.
If they say "I don't know," don't push for a confession; instead ask what they'd do in a made-up version of that situation.
What this tells you
This tells you whether their honesty is becoming internal, something they'd choose even alone in the dark.
