Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“What makes you feel like someone actually understands you?”
What to listen for
If they can describe specific behaviors, someone not interrupting, remembering details, not judging a reaction, they're getting clearer on what real understanding feels like, and they need you to try to be that person more often, not just claim that you already are.
If they say no one really gets them, don't take it personally or argue, ask what it would look like if someone did, since that gives you something concrete to work toward.
If they say "I don't know," ask about a time recently they felt truly listened to, even briefly.
What this tells you
Their answer is a direct map of what it would take for them to feel truly understood by you.
