The prompt

“Have you and a friend ever disagreed about what was actually fair between you two?”

What to listen for

If they can walk through both sides of the disagreement, even the friend's point of view, they're developing the ability to see fairness isn't always black and white, a genuinely mature skill worth pointing out.

If they can only argue their own side, that's normal for this age; gently ask what the friend might have said if asked the same question.

If they say "I don't know," ask about turn-taking, sharing credit, or splitting something recently.
