The prompt

“Do you have a friend who kind of pushes you to be better, at something, or just as a person? Who is it?”

What to listen for

If they can name someone and describe how, that's a sign they're learning to value friendships that stretch them, not just ones that are easy, that's a mature and healthy pattern forming. Ask what it feels like when that friend pushes them; comfortable-uncomfortable is a good sign, resentful is worth a gentle follow-up.

If they say no one really does that, ask if they wish someone did, or if they'd rather all their friendships stay easy and low-pressure right now, both are valid answers at this age.

If the friend they name is actually more critical than encouraging, listen closely to the difference, pushing someone to grow and putting them down can look similar from the outside but feel very different.

What this tells you
