The prompt

“How much freedom do you think you should get to be outside without a grown-up checking in? What feels fair to you?”

What to listen for

If they propose something specific and can explain why they're ready, that's them advocating for real independence with reasoning behind it, worth engaging with seriously even if your answer is still 'not yet.' Listen for whether they mention responsibility ('I'd check in every hour') as part of their own proposal; that shows they're thinking about trust as a two-way deal.

If the answer is vague or just 'way more,' ask what they'd actually do with that freedom, sometimes the real want underneath is less about distance and more about not feeling babysat.

If they say the current rules feel fine, that's worth noting too, not every kid is pushing for more room at the same pace.
