Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Was there a time doing something completely on your own made you feel more confident afterward? What was it?”
What to listen for
If they describe something concrete, going somewhere alone, handling a problem without help, doing an activity solo, listen for the pride in their voice, which tells you independence is currently feeding their confidence in a real way. That's worth naming directly: 'that's exactly the kind of thing that builds real confidence.'
If they can't think of an example, ask if there's something they wish they could try alone but haven't been allowed to yet, this can surface a specific, actionable next step for more independence.
If fear or nervousness comes up alongside the pride, that combination is completely normal and worth acknowledging as part of the same experience, not as a separate concern.
What this tells you
This tells you how ready they currently feel for more independence, and where they've already tasted the confidence that comes with it.
