Tonight with your 9 to 12 year old
The prompt
“Have you ever pictured what kind of parent you might be someday? What would you do the same or differently than us?”
What to listen for
If they mention things they'd do the same, treasure that moment quietly, it's a real, if indirect, form of appreciation. If they mention things they'd do differently, stay curious rather than defensive; this is one of the richest ways kids give you honest feedback about what's working and what isn't, wrapped in a hypothetical that feels safer to answer.
Notice whether their answer focuses on rules, on fun, or on emotional stuff like patience and listening, that focus tells you what they currently value most in a parent.
If they say they've never thought about it, that's fine, you can offer a lighter version, like 'what's one thing you'd definitely keep the same?'
What this tells you
This gives you an honest, low-pressure read on what they value and what they wish were different in how they're being raised right now.
