What to listen for

If they know the story and can retell it, even partially, that's a sign they feel rooted in something bigger than themselves, which is a quiet but real source of security. If they don't know it, watch their reaction as you tell it, genuine interest signals they're hungry for more of these threads connecting them to family history.

If they seem unmoved either way, that's fine, not every kid latches onto family history at this age, and it can matter more later even if it doesn't land tonight.

If they ask follow-up questions about people in the story, that's worth following, even if it takes you off-script for the night.
