What to listen for

Listen for whether the hope is about something personal (a goal, a friendship, getting better at something) or something bigger (the world, the future, other people), both tell you something real about where their optimism currently lives. A specific, detailed answer shows this hope is alive and present for them, not just a nice thing to say.

If they hesitate or say 'I don't know,' that's worth noting gently rather than pushing, it might mean hope feels harder to access right now, and that itself is useful, quiet information worth paying attention to over the coming weeks.

If the answer is about you or the family, let that land fully before moving on, it's a meaningful thing for them to say out loud.
