What to listen for

If they can name something specific, like feeling responsible, or feeling like nobody takes them seriously, they're showing they've been quietly figuring out their own place in the family story, which means they need their perspective taken seriously, not just their birth order.

If they say it's not fair being the oldest or youngest, listen for what's underneath: usually it's a wish to be seen for who they are right now, not just for the role they got assigned.

If they shrug or say they've never thought about it, that's fine, it just means they need a little help noticing their own patterns, so you could gently offer one observation of your own.
